Nicholas W Lukacs, PhD serves as the Godfrey Dorr Stobbe Professor of Pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He maintains affiliations with the Molecular & Cellular Pathology Immunology Graduate Program and the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS), contributing to both medical and graduate education at the institution.
Dr. Lukacs leads an active research program focused on understanding immunologic mechanisms in pulmonary diseases. His laboratory has developed sophisticated animal models of allergic airway disease that replicate clinical features of human asthma, using cockroach skin test antigen to induce Th2-skewed responses with characteristic eosinophil accumulation and mucus overproduction. His research spans multiple interconnected areas:
- Dendritic cell biology in pulmonary immunity
- Long-term consequences of early-life RSV infection on immune development
- Epigenetic mechanisms governing persistent immune alterations
- Mast cell biology and stem cell factor interactions
- Microbiome-immune system crosstalk in respiratory health
- Systemic metabolite profiles affecting lung function
Dr. Lukacs' groundbreaking work has demonstrated how early-life respiratory infections modify systemic immune responses in neonates, leading to exacerbated asthmatic responses later in life. His research has established connections between persistent innate immune cells (particularly dendritic cells and ILC2 cells) and the development of pro-asthmatic Th2 lung environments. Notably, his laboratory discovered that probiotic supplementation with Lactobacillus johnsonii can attenuate long-term lung function changes associated with early-life infections, suggesting potential therapeutic interventions.
His laboratory actively investigates how early environmental factors shape chronic pulmonary disease through systemic immune modulatory events, with particular focus on how RSV responses and microbiome alterations interact to affect long-term lung structure and function. This work bridges basic immunology with translational applications for chronic respiratory conditions.
