معرفی
Dr. Ryan Thwaites is an Assistant Professor in Respiratory Immunology at the National Heart & Lung Institute (NHLI), part of Imperial College London's Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on the immune mechanisms governing respiratory viral infections, particularly Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), influenza, and SARS-CoV-2. He leads the Thwaites Lab Group, which develops non-invasive sampling techniques (e.g., nasosorption) to study viral infections in children and adults.
Thwaites holds a PhD in innate immunology from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (2015) and completed postdoctoral work at NHLI under Professors Peter Openshaw and Trevor Hansel. His work during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic contributed to understanding immune responses in severe cases and vaccine efficacy through the ISARIC4C consortium.
Research themes include viral pathogenesis, biomarker discovery, and immune correlates of protection. His team investigates neutrophil roles in respiratory infections, microbiome dynamics, and long-term sequelae of viral illnesses (e.g., Long-COVID).
Thwaites collaborates internationally on multi-omic studies, genetic susceptibility analyses, and clinical trials. He has advised on pandemic preparedness and contributed to global guidelines for respiratory virus management.
