Nicholas Ryan Coates

Nicholas Ryan Coates is a Senior Lecturer at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), Department of Architecture. He co-teaches the master's studio and seminar series Re-Store, focusing on energy, weather, and petroleum in architectural contexts. His academic roles include diploma coordination and supervision for the Master's program in Architecture.

He has taught internationally at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and Virginia Tech, where he co-directed the Nordic Design Program and led preparatory courses. In 2024, he curated the centenary exhibition Professor Sverre Fehn at AHO, highlighting Fehn's influence on architectural education.

Coates founded Studio Coates, a multidisciplinary practice exploring materiality and media in architecture. His research aligns with themes of circularity, energy, and transformation, as evidenced by projects like Provenance Projected and publications on Petroarchitecture and Sverre Fehn's legacy.
