His research explores modernism through humanistic lenses and examines resource extraction as an ongoing process in architectural practice. He co-leads the Subject Matter studio with Helle Bendixen Trier through the Provenance Projected initiative, focusing on the material bases of architecture, including stone, metals, and fabrics, and their historical, economic, and cultural contexts.
McQuillan’s recent publications (2024) include critical analyses of Anna-Eva Bergman and Sverre Fehn, with specific attention to material culture and architectural representation. His 2021 publications examined Le Corbusier’s Cap Martin work and material provenance in architectural documentation.
Through collaborations with institutions like Nasjonalmuseet and Helen & Hard/SAAHA, he has contributed to understanding architectural materiality in both theoretical and practical contexts. His work spans architectural history, design philosophy, and material transformation studies.
