Erik Fenstad Langdalen

Erik Fenstad Langdalen is a Professor of Architecture at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), where he teaches and conducts research focused on architectural preservation, concrete architecture, and building systems. As both an active practitioner and academic, he runs the award-winning Erik Langdalen Arkitektkontor, which specializes in the preservation and transformation of historic buildings including the former US Embassy in Oslo (2023), the Dombås Church (2023), and the PoMO Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Trondheim.

Langdalen's research centers on the recent past with particular emphasis on concrete architecture and building systems. Since 2021, he has explored the concept of provenance in master studios and seminars. He leads the Re-Store course portfolio, which investigates how architectural education can respond to the climate crisis through reuse, preservation, and transformation of existing structures. His scholarly work spans architectural preservation theory, modern architecture, and the relationship between architecture and cultural heritage.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on Sverre Fehn's work, concrete architecture in Oslo, and the intersection of architecture with climate adaptation. The articles reveal consistent themes in modern architecture studies, preservation theory, and architectural history, with increasing attention to climate-responsive approaches in recent years.

Langdalen is the owner of the cultural center Budsjord Historic Farm at Dovre and has contributed significantly to architectural discourse through his books including Hamsun, Holl, Hamarøy (2010), Experimental Preservation (2016), Concrete Oslo (2018), and Sverre Fehn, Nordic Pavilion, Venice. Voices from the Archive (2021).

He holds a Diploma of Architecture from AHO and a M.ARCH AAD from Columbia University GSAPP, bringing both Norwegian and international perspectives to his teaching and practice.
