Dr. Nicholas R. Eaton is Professor and Director of Clinical Training at Stony Brook University, with joint appointments in Psychiatry and Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies. His research redefines psychopathology classification using data-driven approaches like the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP), where he serves on the Executive Board.
Key interests include mental health disparities affecting sexual/gender minorities, quantitative methods for nosology, and AI applications in psychology. Current NIH/ESRC-funded projects examine transdiagnostic risk factors across developmental trajectories.
Publications demonstrate leadership in dimensional psychiatry, with recent work on EEG biomarkers of internalizing disorders and validation of avoidance measures. Articles consistently advocate for alternatives to traditional diagnostic categories.
Awarded the Samuel M. Turner Early Career Award for diversity research, Dr. Eaton supervises doctoral students investigating LGBTQ+ mental health and computational psychiatry. He serves on the DSM Externalizing Disorders Review Committee.
