Roman Kotov, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook University, School of Medicine. His research focuses on refining psychiatric classification systems, studying vulnerabilities to mental disorders through quantitative modeling, molecular genetics, and neuroscience. Key areas include anxiety/mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and mental-physical comorbidity. Kotov leads NIH-funded studies on personality development, psychosis recovery trajectories, and mental-physical comorbidity in World Trade Center responders.
Education: BS (Physics and Psychology) from The Ohio State University (2000), MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Iowa (2003, 2006), and a psychology internship at Brown University (2006).
Research Interests: Longitudinal research, quantitative methods, personality-psychopathology interface, classification of mental disorders, neural markers, and mental-physical comorbidity. He is the Consortium Lead for the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP), a transdiagnostic framework redefining psychiatric nosology.
Grants & Awards: Principal Investigator on NIH/NIOSH grants studying psychosis trajectories and mental-physical comorbidity. Recipient of the University of Iowa Spence Award (2006).
Labs/Teams: Leads multidisciplinary teams at Stony Brook, focusing on trauma-related mental health, psychopathology classification, and biomarker discovery. Collaborates on projects involving AI-driven language analysis for PTSD and facial emotion expression dynamics in psychosis.
