Nicholas Port serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington's College of Arts & Sciences and as a Professor at the IU School of Optometry. He joined the School of Optometry faculty in August 2005.
Dr. Port completed his undergraduate training at NYU's Center for Neural Science (1990) and pre-graduate work at Oxford University's Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience (1991), earning his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota in 1997. He completed postdoctoral training at the Laboratory for Sensorimotor Research at the National Eye Institute.
His research centers on using the visual-saccadic system as a model for understanding how the nervous system processes sensory information and produces action. His laboratory pursues two primary research directions: investigating the neurophysiological mechanisms behind visual stability during frequent saccadic eye movements, and testing whether mathematical models accurately represent the underlying neurophysiological computations in information processing and decision-making.
Dr. Port's work bridges theoretical computational approaches with empirical neurophysiological data to advance understanding of sensorimotor integration and visual perception. His dual appointment allows him to connect basic neuroscience research with optometric applications.
