Nicholas McCaul is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, affiliated with the School of Applied Sciences and the Department of Physical and Life Sciences. He accepts PhD students and actively contributes to research in molecular biology and immunology.
- B.Sc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester
- PhD in Protein Folding at Utrecht University
- Postdoctoral Research at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School
McCaul’s research bridges protein folding dynamics, nanobody development, and immunological applications. His work explores:
- Role of endoplasmic reticulum in oxidative protein folding
- Unfolded protein response during B cell activation
- Nanobodies for Ebolavirus and flavivirus neutralization
- AMPylation in immune function and learning
- Targeting MHC complexes for vaccine and tolerance studies
Recent publications highlight trends in immunology, virology, and protein engineering:
- 2025: Analysis of B-cell receptor isotype distribution
- 2021: SARS-CoV-2 vaccines using nanobody-MHC targeting
- 2021: AMPylation’s impact on cytokine secretion and cognition
McCaul is a member of the Biochemical Society and the Royal Society of Biology. He supervises PhD students and focuses on flavivirus infections (Dengue, Zika) using tools from his postdoc and PhD.
