Nicholas Eyre is a Senior Research Fellow in Microscopy at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health and a Full Member of the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute. With an h-index of 17 and 1,221 citations across 42 research outputs, his work significantly contributes to virology and molecular biology research.
His primary research focuses on virus-host interactions and replication mechanisms for (+)RNA viruses including dengue virus (DENV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and Zika virus (ZIKV). Dr. Eyre employs novel reporter virus tools, high-resolution imaging techniques, and targeted manipulation of viral genomes to understand viral replication compartment formation and function.
Dr. Eyre's publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to flavivirus research, with recent work examining dengue virus protein secretion mechanisms, live-cell imaging techniques for virus infection studies, and placental responses to Zika virus. His research bridges molecular virology with advanced microscopy to identify potential targets for antiviral drug development.
His notable recognition includes:
- 2016: International Symposium on Hepatitis C Virus and Related Viruses Travel Fellowship
- 2015: Australian Virology Society 'Oral Poster Award'
- 2011: Australian Centre for Hepatitis Virology Robert Dixon Memorial Award
- 2010: Gilead Sciences Hepatitis Early Career Investigator Gold Medal
Dr. Eyre has secured substantial research funding through multiple NHMRC Ideas Grants (2024-2026, 2022-2024, 2020-2022), NHMRC Project Grants (2019-2021, 2018-2020), and additional funding from Therapeutic Innovation Australia, The Hospital Research Foundation, and Flinders Foundation, totaling over $2.7 million in research support.
