Michael Beard

Professor Michael Beard is a faculty member in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide, within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. He serves as the Head of the Viral Pathogenesis Research Laboratory (VPRL), focusing on viral pathogenesis and antiviral strategies against Flaviviridae viruses such as HCV, Dengue, West Nile, and Zika. His research emphasizes innate immune responses, particularly interferon-epsilon's role in FRT protection against ZIKV, and employs advanced techniques like CRISPR screens and liver organoid models. He has secured continuous NHMRC funding since 2002, including an NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship. His work spans viral entry mechanisms, host-pathogen interactions, and translational vaccine strategies using gamma-irradiation and DNA vaccination.
