Dr. Alessia Ruggieri is a Group Leader at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Molecular Virology within the Faculty of Medicine at Heidelberg University. She leads a research team investigating molecular switches in cellular signal transmission and viral pathogenesis at the Center for Infectious Diseases.
Education:
- PhD in Virology, École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France (2003)
- Master's research, University of Lyon, France (1996-1998)
- Biology studies, University of Metz, France (1994-1996)
Her research focuses on molecular virology, particularly host-pathogen interactions, viral replication mechanisms, and cellular stress responses. She specializes in hepatitis C, dengue, Zika, and HIV viruses, examining how these pathogens manipulate cellular organelles (mitochondria, lipid droplets) and disrupt host translation processes to establish infection.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on viral replication dynamics, cellular organelle remodeling during infection, and host defense evasion strategies. Recent work emphasizes spatio-temporal aspects of replication compartment formation and stress granule dynamics.
Awards:
- Fellowship of Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation (2014-2016)
As Group Leader, she oversees virology research projects and collaborations, maintaining active investigations into virus-induced cellular restructuring using advanced imaging and molecular techniques.
