Jill Carr is a Professor in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University and a Full Member of the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute. She serves as Laboratory Head of Virus Research and maintains active teaching responsibilities across medical and biomedical science programs at the university.
Her educational background includes a BSc (1990) and First Class Honors BSc in Biochemistry (1991) from the University of Adelaide, followed by a PhD in Biochemistry (1995) from the same institution. Prior to joining Flinders University in March 2011, she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at IMVS/SA Pathology from 1996-2008, with part-time work from 1998-2011 due to family commitments while studying HIV replication mechanisms and virus-host interactions.
Professor Carr's research focuses on host responses to viral infections and determinants of pathogenesis. Her work spans multiple areas of Medical Virology, with particular emphasis on dengue virus, zika virus, and enteric viruses. She investigates virus-host interactions, innate immune responses, and viral inflammatory mechanisms in various contexts including eye disease and neurological conditions through collaborations with Professor Dave Gordon, Professor Stuart Pitson, and Professor Justine Smith.
Her research program has resulted in 71 publications with an h-index of 23 and over 1,700 citations. Recent work demonstrates continued productivity with multiple publications in 2023-2025, showing active engagement in cutting-edge virology research, particularly in viral pathogenesis and host response mechanisms.
- Local Organising committee for the Australian Society for Microbiology Conference, Adelaide (2013, 2019)
- Committee Member, Australasian Society for Virology (2013-2018)
- Reviewer, Flinders University Institutional Biosafety Committee (2012-current)
She has supervised research students including principal supervision of work on 'Altered responses of dengue virus infected cells to TNF-a.' Her laboratory maintains multiple collaborative relationships with researchers across Australian institutions, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern virology research.
Professor Carr leads the Virology Research laboratory which focuses on understanding viral pathogenesis and host responses, with applications to diagnostic and therapeutic development for viral diseases, particularly those affecting global health.
