Nesrine Basheer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. An applied linguist specializing in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL), her work focuses on writing pedagogy, language assessment, and multidialectal approaches to Arabic instruction. She has taught at institutions including the American University in Cairo, the United Nations, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Maryland, and the University of Sydney.
- Education: Ph.D. in Arabic Applied Linguistics (University of Texas at Austin, 2016), M.A. in Applied Linguistics (Columbia University, 2011), Graduate Diploma in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (American University in Cairo, 2011)
Her research explores Arabic diglossia, writing assessment strategies, and the integration of dialectal varieties in L2 instruction. She has authored articles on topics such as advanced learner profiles in multidialectal environments and connector usage in Arabic writing.
Notable awards include the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Early Career Teaching (University of Sydney, 2019) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Award (with Distinction) (University of Sydney, 2018). She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
