Nelli Mnatsakanyan is an Associate Professor at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She holds an adjunct appointment in Endocrinology at Yale School of Medicine. Her research focuses on mitochondrial ATP synthase's role in cell death and neurodegenerative diseases. She completed her PhD in Biophysics at Yerevan State University (2003) and postdoctoral training at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, studying ATP synthase catalytic mechanisms.
- Key Research Goals:
- Structural characterization of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) using cryo-EM
- Electrophysiological analysis of ATP synthase leak channels
- Developing CRISPR-edited mouse models for Alzheimer's disease
- Awards:
- RF1 Award (NIA, 2021)
- Young Bioenergeticist Award (Biophysical Society, 2018)
- Professional Affiliations:
- Member, Biophysical Society
- Associate Editor, Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy
Her work bridges structural biology and clinical applications, aiming to develop therapies targeting mitochondrial channels in neurodegenerative disorders.
