Nektaria Klapaki is a Lecturer in the Hellenic Studies Program at the University of Washington’s Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, with affiliations in the Comparative Religion Program and as Director of the Greece Study Abroad Program. She holds a Ph.D. (2006) and M.A. (1996) in Modern Greek Studies from the University of London, and a B.A. in Classics from the University of Crete (1995).
Her research focuses on Modern Greek literature and culture, emphasizing classical reception, secularization, nationalism, and gender studies. Key themes include the role of epiphany in modern Greek poetry, the intersection of modern Greek identity with Western modernity, and the revival of ancient Greek religious motifs in contemporary literature. Her work bridges comparative literature and interdisciplinary cultural studies.
Recent publications include co-editing a special issue of Journal of Modern Hellenism (2019) and articles on surrealism in Greece and the afterlife of ancient Greek gods in modern poetry. She serves as Arts & Humanities Associate Editor of the Journal of Modern Greek Studies and on the editorial board of the Journal of Modern Hellenism.
Her teaching spans courses on Greek history, modern Greece, and Mediterranean migration. Research and teaching have been supported by the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, the Greek State Scholarship Foundation, and Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies.
