Sarah Iles Johnston is the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Religion and Professor of Classics at The Ohio State University. She holds additional appointments in the Departments of History and Comparative Studies. Her research focuses on ancient Mediterranean religions, mythological narratives, and the intersection of classical traditions with modern storytelling. She has a Ph.D. from Cornell University (1987) and has authored seminal works such as The Story of Myth (2018) and Gods and Mortals (2023), which reframe ancient Greek myths for contemporary audiences. Her scholarship bridges disciplines, exploring how narratives shape religious beliefs and examining themes like the afterlife, divine-human interactions, and supernatural horror in both ancient and modern contexts. She actively advises doctoral students and engages in public lectures, including a 2023 Smithsonian event on Greek myths about death. Affiliated with the Center for the Study of Religion, her work also extends to comparative studies of myth, narratology, and cultural analysis.
