Neil Roughley is Professor for Philosophical Anthropology and Ethics at the University of Duisburg-Essen since September 2009 and currently serves as Deputy Head of Department. His research focuses on metaethics, philosophical psychology, action theory, and the philosophy of human nature. He co-organizes the biannual workshop series MetaEssen and PhEEL, which emphasize detailed constructive debate on topics such as ethical particularism, automatic action, and the agential dimensions of emotions.
- Key Projects: Co-led the DFG/AHRC-funded project How Does it Feel? Interpersonal Understanding and Affective Empathy with the University of Liverpool.
- Collaborators: Works closely with colleagues like Hichem Naar, Nick Laskowski, and students Christiana Werner and Katharina Sodoma.
His research explores the intersections of epistemology, ethics, and affective states, particularly how norms shape human life forms. Grants such as the DFG and AHRC funding underpin his collaborative transdisciplinary work.
