Benedict Smith is an Associate Professor and Director of the Taught MA in Philosophy at Durham University's Department of Philosophy. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Glasgow and postgraduate work at the University of Warwick.
His primary research interests span ethics and moral philosophy, with particular focus on metaethics, Wittgenstein studies, Hume scholarship, and philosophy of psychiatry. His work often explores connections between naturalism, normativity, and embodied experience. He has made significant contributions to understanding moral particularism, the phenomenology of depression, and the philosophical implications of Hume's work.
Smith's recent publications demonstrate a consistent engagement with the intersection of philosophical theory and practical concerns, particularly in mental health contexts. His research shows strong thematic continuity across ethics, epistemology, and phenomenology, with increasing attention to the connections between philosophical theory and clinical practice.
As an academic leader, he serves as Director of the Taught MA in Philosophy program at Durham and has supervised numerous PhD students working on topics in moral philosophy, metaethics, phenomenology, philosophy of psychiatry, philosophy of mind and action, and Wittgenstein.
Smith was part of a 3-year AHRC/DFG project titled 'Emotional Experience in Depression: A Philosophical Study' and has developed teaching sessions on depression for Newcastle Recovery College based on this work. His research presentations have taken him to academic institutions across the globe, including China University of Political Science and Law, University of Ottawa, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, KU Leuven, University of Johannesburg, La Sapienza University of Rome, and University of Gdansk.
