Adam Smith (1723–1790) was a Scottish moral philosopher and economist, renowned as a central figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. He held academic positions at the University of Glasgow, including the Chair of Logic (1751–1752) and later the Chair of Moral Philosophy (1752–1764). His work bridges philosophy and political economy, addressing ethics, human behavior, and economic systems. Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, he studied at Glasgow College and Oxford University, where he was influenced by Francis Hutcheson and later engaged with contemporaries like David Hume. Smith’s seminal works include The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), exploring ethics and empathy, and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), foundational to classical economics. Central themes include the role of sympathy in morality, the division of labor, free markets, and the limits of governmental intervention. Though often labeled the 'father of capitalism,' his philosophy emphasizes morality’s integration with economic activity.
- Education: Studied at Glasgow College (1737) and Balliol College, Oxford (1740–1746).
- Key Influences: Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, and the Scottish Enlightenment.
Research Interests: Smith’s work unifies moral philosophy and political economy. In Moral Sentiments, he argues that human morality arises from empathy via the impartial spectator, a self-regulating moral conscience. In Wealth of Nations, he advocates free markets, division of labor, and limited government, emphasizing wealth creation through labor and trade. His theories reject pure egoism, asserting that markets are moral frameworks fostering societal well-being.
Legacy: Smith’s ideas shaped modern economics and ethics. His critique of mercantilism, advocacy for free trade, and analysis of labor productivity remain influential. Despite his focus on commercial society, he prioritized morality, arguing that economic success should serve societal welfare. His work continues to provoke debates on capitalism’s ethical foundations.
