Eric Schliesser is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the Programme Group 'Challenges to Democratic Representation'. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on the history of political thought, particularly Adam Smith, Hume, Spinoza, and the origins of liberalism. He explores themes such as political economy, ethics, philosophy of science, and the intersection of AI with epistemology and ethics.
His work critically examines the 'Das Adam Smith Problem'—the perceived inconsistency between Smith’s Wealth of Nations and Theory of Moral Sentiments—and engages with thinkers like Foucault and Tocqueville on topics like enlightened despotism. He also investigates federalism, externalities, and the methodology of synthetic philosophy.
Dr. Schliesser’s publications span over two decades, addressing themes from early modern philosophy to contemporary debates on liberalism, power dynamics, and democratic institutions. He actively contributes to public intellectual discourse through his Substack blog 'Digressions & Impressions' and podcast appearances discussing political economy and historical philosophy.
