Neil Humphrey is Professor of Psychology of Education at the University of Manchester's Manchester Institute of Education. He completed psychology studies at the University of Liverpool and holds a PhD in Education from Liverpool John Moores University. His research spans social and emotional learning, mental health promotion in schools, and special educational needs, particularly autism spectrum conditions.
Current research projects include #BeeWell (2021-2026), Health and Life Skills (2023-2027), and national evaluations of school-based mental health interventions. Research interests:
- Universal school-based mental health interventions
- Developmental pathways of internalizing symptoms
- Intersectional approaches to adolescent wellbeing
- Implementation science in educational settings
- Digital experiences and mental health
Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal strong methodological diversity including systematic reviews, RCTs, longitudinal analyses, and mixed-methods approaches. Key themes include implementation fidelity in SEL programs, digital wellbeing measurement, and neighborhood effects on mental health trajectories.
Professor Humphrey leads the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies and advises Place2Be and the Child Outcomes Research Consortium. He has secured over £10 million in research funding from ESRC, NIHR and Education Endowment Foundation.
