Neil Hoult is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen's University, affiliated with the Smith School of Business & Engineering. His research focuses on sustainable infrastructure, concrete materials, structural health monitoring, and railway systems. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and degrees from the University of Toronto.
Research Interests: Geotechnical engineering, concrete materials, infrastructure resilience, structural behavior optimization, railway and airport engineering, fiber optics for sensing, and smart infrastructure systems.
Key Contributions: Advanced methods for assessing infrastructure deterioration, low-carbon concrete development, distributed fiber optic sensing for real-time monitoring, and innovative culvert and pipeline rehabilitation techniques. Recent work emphasizes reducing CO2 emissions in construction through optimized material use.
Advising: Currently supervising Heshan Fernando (Postdoctoral Fellow at Ingenuity Labs Research Institute). Past work includes postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge under Dr. Janet Lees.
