Joshua Woods is an Assistant Professor at Queen's University within the Department of Civil Engineering at Smith Engineering. He holds the endowed title of Mitchell Professor and is affiliated with the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute. His expertise spans structural engineering, advanced materials, and smart infrastructure systems.
Dr. Woods earned his PhD in Civil Engineering and is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). His research focuses on structural monitoring, timber-steel hybrid systems, earthquake engineering, and sustainable construction technologies. He has pioneered work with distributed fiber optic sensors and UAV-based inspection frameworks for infrastructure assessment.
Notable research trends include: 1) Integration of FRP materials for structural rehabilitation, 2) Development of low-carbon concrete solutions, and 3) Application of autonomous systems for infrastructure inspection. His recent work emphasizes smart cities and digital transformation in civil infrastructure monitoring.
Dr. Woods has received the Mitchell Professorship award recognizing his academic contributions. His grants include funding for hybrid simulation methodologies and sensor technology development. He currently leads the Structural Health Monitoring Lab and collaborates with industry on functional grading concrete innovations.
Open positions exist for graduate students interested in timber engineering, sensor systems, or structural sustainability. His Ellis Hall laboratory (Room 204) supports advanced experimental setups for material testing and structural analysis.
