Dr Neil Archer is a Senior Lecturer in Film at the School of Humanities, Keele University. He holds a PhD in French Cinema from the University of Cambridge and an MA in World Cinemas from the University of Leeds. His academic roles include representing the MRes (Media) program on the Postgraduate Committee and acting as the Media AHRC PhD contact.
Dr Archer’s research focuses on late 20th- and 21st-century film aesthetics, with specializations in British, European, and Hollywood cinemas. Key interests include sport and mobility in film, parody, and transnational cinema. His work has been published in journals like JCMS: Journal for Cinema and Media Studies and Studies in European Cinema. Notable books include Cinema and Brexit (2021) and Beyond a Joke (2017), which received prestigious award nominations.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on film analysis, Hollywood global cinemas, science fiction, and screenwriting. He has successfully supervised four PhD students, focusing on topics ranging from Derek Jarman’s cinema to adaptations of Dickens’ novels. His research also explores the intersection of sport and film, including studies on British sports films and UEFA’s cultural influence.
Awards include a Kraszna-Krausz Book Award nomination and BAFTSS monograph shortlist recognition. Dr Archer’s interdisciplinary work bridges film studies with broader cultural, political, and social themes, contributing to both academic discourse and public engagement through media commentary.
