Professor Nehal Bhuta holds the Chair of Public International Law at the University of Edinburgh and co-directs the Edinburgh Centre for International and Global Law. Previously, he was Chair of Public International Law at the European University Institute (EUI) and Co-Director of its Academy of European Law. His research spans doctrinal, historical, and theoretical issues in international law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, and international criminal law. He is an editorial board member of the European Journal of International Law, Journal of International Criminal Justice, and Constellations, and a founding editor of Humanity.
Research interests include the historical foundations of international law, social rights, autonomous weapons systems, and legal responses to global challenges like state fragility. Recent works address the transition of human rights frameworks and the application of AI in legal contexts. Bhuta has co-edited influential volumes such as Freedom of Religion, Secularism and Human Rights (OUP) and Autonomous Weapons Systems - Law, Ethics, Policy (CUP).
His academic trajectory includes faculty roles at the New School for Social Research and University of Toronto, alongside prior work with Human Rights Watch and the International Center for Transitional Justice. He advises on legal and policy frameworks for global governance, including refugee rights and armed conflict ethics.
