Dr. Miles Jackson is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Law and holds dual fellowships at Jesus College as Sir David Lewis Fellow and Tutorial Fellow in Law. He holds degrees from Oxford (MA/DPhil), Harvard Law School (LLM), and the University of South Africa (LLB). His research focuses on international law, criminal law, and human rights, with specializations in state responsibility, armed conflict law, and international criminal accountability.
He teaches undergraduate Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, and Public International Law, while postgraduate courses include International Law and Armed Conflict. His doctoral work on complicity in international law, supported by a Rhodes Scholarship, was published by OUP (2015). In 2017, he received the Cassese Prize for International Criminal Law Studies. His current research explores politics in international criminal justice and countermeasures in state responsibility.
Miles advises governments (e.g., Malaysia, Denmark) and organizations like NATO and Human Rights Watch, and has appeared before the International Court of Justice. He directs the Oxford International Law Course for Military Lawyers and co-directs legal training programs for armed forces. His legal practice includes New York bar admission and clerkships at South Africa’s Constitutional Court and the ICJ.
Key research projects involve the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict and the Tallinn Manual on Cyber Operations. His scholarship appears in top journals including AJIL and EJIL, addressing issues like command responsibility, countermeasures, and apartheid’s legal definition. Professional roles include Oxford Pro Bono Publico committee membership and leadership of transitional justice initiatives.
