Neeraj Dhaun is a Professor of Nephrology and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the University of Edinburgh, where he serves as Director of the Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility. He leads the Neeraj Dhaun Research Group within the Centre for Cardiovascular Science, focusing on cardiovascular risk across the spectrum of chronic kidney disease (CKD) from early stages through kidney failure.
His multidisciplinary research integrates pre-clinical, clinical, and data science approaches to address critical gaps in nephrology and cardiovascular medicine. Key initiatives include:
- Investigating innate immunity's role in hypertension using macrophage-targeted strategies in mouse models
- Studying the AKI-to-CKD transition and novel interventions via ischaemia-reperfusion models
- Developing chorioretinal thinning (via OCT) as a clinical biomarker for cardiovascular risk
- Exploring apelin's therapeutic potential and endothelin receptor antagonism in vasculitis
- Analyzing population-level cardiovascular trends in kidney failure using Scottish healthcare datasets
Dr. Dhaun secures major funding from the British Heart Foundation, Chief Scientist Office, Kidney Research UK, and Medical Research Council. His team comprises clinical research fellows, postdoctoral researchers, bioinformaticians, and technicians collaborating on experimental medicine and translational projects.
The research group operates advanced facilities for mouse disease modeling, optical coherence tomography, PET/MR imaging, and bioinformatics analysis, with future work focused on early cardiovascular risk detection and novel therapeutics for improved CKD outcomes.
