Neal Young, M.D., a Senior Investigator at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), leads groundbreaking research in hematology with a focus on bone marrow failure syndromes. His work spans basic science, clinical trials, and epidemiology, integrating advanced technologies like single-cell RNAseq, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, and SomaLogic proteomics.
- Education: Harvard College (A.B., 1967), Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (M.D., 1971)
- Leadership: Transformed hematology training in Vietnam; heads NIH-wide human immunology initiative
Research interests revolve around understanding blood cell production in health and disease, particularly aplastic anemia, PNH, MDS, and telomeropathies. His lab employs murine models to explore immune-mediated marrow failure and novel therapies like rapamycin and sex hormone modulation.
Selected scientific awards include the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal and recognition as a Master of the American College of Physicians. He has authored over 280 peer-reviewed articles and 10 medical textbooks.
Clinical Protocols include studies on eltrombopag treatment for marrow failure, campath for LGL, and rapamycin to prevent relapse in AA. His team emphasizes collaboration with close interaction across the Hematology Branch.
