Neal Baer, M.D., is a Lecturer on Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Co-Director of the M.S. in Media, Medicine, and Health Program. He holds adjunct and clinical professor roles at UCLA and USC. A physician and award-winning TV producer, he integrates media storytelling into public health advocacy. His work spans ER, Law & Order: SVU, and Designated Survivor, addressing societal issues through drama.
Education: B.A. Political Science (Colorado College, magna cum laude), M.Ed. (Harvard Graduate School of Education), M.A. Sociology (Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences), and M.D. from HMS. Honorary LL.D. from Colorado College (2000).
Research focuses on adolescent health, global health equity, and media’s role in health communication. He co-founded the Institute for Photographic Empowerment, using storytelling to amplify marginalized voices in HIV/AIDS-affected communities. His edited book The Promise and Peril of CRISPR explores genetic engineering ethics.
Notable awards include the Peabody Award for Welcome to Chechnya, MLA Award for a CRISPR-themed journal issue, and the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Scholarship for bridging medicine and media.
Leadership roles include co-chairing Hollywood, Health and Society (CDC/Gates Foundation-backed), and board memberships at the Venice Family Clinic, RAND Health, and Writers Guild of America Health Fund.
