Edward Hundert, M.D., is a Senior Lecturer on Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS), serving as Associate Director of the HMS Center for Bioethics and Senior Philanthropic Advisor in Alumni Affairs. He previously served as Dean for Medical Education at HMS (2014–2023), President of Case Western Reserve University, and Dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. His work focuses on medical education innovation, ethics, and curriculum design, including pioneering the 'Double Helix Curriculum' and contributing to discussions on professionalism through his research on the 'hidden curriculum.'
Education: B.A. (summa cum laude) in Mathematics and History of Science/Medicine from Yale University; M.Phil. in Philosophy, Politics & Economics (first class honors) from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar; M.D. from HMS. Completed psychiatric residency at McLean Hospital.
Research emphasizes intersections of philosophy, psychiatry, and neuroscience. Authored Philosophy, Psychiatry and Neuroscience: Three Approaches to the Mind (Oxford UP) and Lessons from an Optical Illusion: On Nature and Nurture, Knowledge and Values (Harvard UP). Served on boards of TIAA-CREF, American Association of Medical Colleges, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Co-chaired the Institute of Medicine’s National Summit on Health Professions Education.
