Dr. Nathan Pavlos is an Associate Professor and Head of the Bone Biology & Disease Laboratory at the University of Western Australia's School of Biomedical Sciences. He holds prestigious fellowships including FASBMR and FIOR. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of osteoclasts in bone diseases like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, combining microscopy and omics approaches. He leads multiple research initiatives and has secured over $11M in grants. Key roles include Chair of the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Committee and President of the ANZORS. Pavlos has authored over 97 publications in journals like Cell and Nature, and his work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
- Education: BSc (Hons) and PhD (Distinction) from University of Western Australia (1999, 2005).
- Research Interests: Bone resorption, intracellular trafficking, osteoclast biology, and musculoskeletal disorders. Uses innovative microscopy and high-throughput genomic/proteomic screens.
Recent Research Trends: Focus on integrating omics data to understand bone disease mechanisms, targeting membrane transporters, and exploring therapeutic potentials for bone disorders. Recent articles address heterotopic ossification, antisense oligonucleotide delivery, and genetic regulation of osteoarthritis.
- Awards: Includes NHMRC grants, finalist teaching awards, and international fellowships.
- Grants: Over 40 grants from NHMRC, ARC, and foundations like Arthritis Australia and Raine Foundation.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Bone Biology & Disease Laboratory and the Tissue Repair and Regenerative Biology Research Cluster. Collaborates internationally, including with the Max-Planck-Institute.
