معرفی
Professor Gerald Atkins is the Professor of Orthopaedic Research and Scientific Director of the Centre for Orthopaedic and Trauma Research (COTR) at the University of Adelaide. He leads the Biomedical Orthopaedic Research Group within COTR, focusing on human musculoskeletal biology, metabolism, and diseases such as bone tumours, infections (e.g., PJI, diabetic foot infection), and fracture repair. His research integrates molecular tools, cell biology, and clinical cohort studies with orthopaedic surgeons and clinicians at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
- Affiliations: Adelaide Medical School, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
- Educations: PhD in Orthopaedic Research
Research interests include the pathobiology of musculoskeletal infections, osteocyte biology, and translational research for bone diseases. His work highlights the role of osteocytes as a niche for persistent bacterial infections (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus) and the limitations of current antibiotic therapies against intracellular pathogens.
Key achievements include over 200 publications (12,000+ citations, H-index 60), $14M+ in grants, and leadership roles in ANZORS and ANZBMS. Recent articles emphasize novel infection models, antibiotic efficacy, and molecular targets in osteoarthritis.
- Awards: NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship, NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship, FIOR
Grants and collaborations span musculoskeletal infection mechanisms, surgical outcomes, and prebiotic interventions. His lab develops 3D-printed implants and evaluates hypoxia-activated prodrugs for osteosarcoma treatment.
