Dr. Nathan Kettlewell is an Associate Professor in the Economics Discipline Group at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course and the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA). He holds a PhD from UNSW Sydney (2017) and previously worked at the University of Sydney (2017-2019). His primary research focuses on public policy, health economics, and behavioral economics, with emphasis on risk preferences, private health insurance demand, and causal program evaluation.
Dr. Kettlewell leads the Australian Twins Economic Preferences Survey (ATEPS), a groundbreaking study examining genetic and environmental influences on decision-making traits using over 1,100 twin pairs. This project has received funding from the ARC Life Course Centre and UTS. His work has been published in top journals like Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and Journal of Health Economics.
He has secured significant grants, including an ARC Discovery Project (DP250100430) on public vs. private healthcare provision (2025-2027) and a UTS Chancellor's Research Fellowship (2019-2023). Awards include the Australian Health Economics Society's Rising Star Award (2022) and multiple UTS accolades.
