Dr. Nathan Fretwell is a Lecturer in Inclusion, Childhood, and Youth at the University of Leeds' School of Education, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He joined in July 2025, previously holding roles at Middlesex University and the University of Essex. His research focuses on family-school relations, educational activism, and policy, with a recent emphasis on parental campaigns and family support systems in schools. Fretwell holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Essex and maintains interdisciplinary interests in continental philosophy and sociology of education.
He currently serves as Programme Leader for the BA Education degree and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate Childhood Studies programs. Professional memberships include the British Educational Research Association and British Sociological Association. Recent work includes a co-authored book on education and childhood policy, and a pilot study on family support workers in schools. Fretwell actively engages in public discourse via Bluesky, discussing topics like parental activism and educational policy.
