Prof Natasha Smallwood is a Professor and Director of Respiratory Medicine at The Alfred Hospital and Monash University School of Translational Medicine. She specializes in chronic respiratory diseases, particularly COPD and pulmonary fibrosis, with expertise in breathlessness management and palliative care. She leads the Chronic Respiratory Disease Research Group and the COPD/Breathlessness Services at The Alfred Hospital.
Education: MBBS (University of Nottingham, 1999), MSc Epidemiology (University of Melbourne, 2011), PhD Respiratory Medicine (University of Melbourne, 2019), Masters in Health Leadership (UNSW, 2025). She holds qualifications in medical leadership, palliative care, and corporate governance.
Research Focus: Prioritizes symptom management in severe lung diseases, palliative care integration, and healthcare leadership. Her work addresses disparities in care access, healthcare worker wellbeing, and gender equality in medicine. She has pioneered interventions like singing programs for respiratory patients and technology-enabled self-management tools.
