Natalie Welfens

Natalie Welfens is a researcher at the Hertie School's Centre for Fundamental Rights, focusing on refugee mobility, categorization practices, and rights in Europe and the Middle East. She earned her PhD in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam (2021) and holds a Double-Master in International Relations and Political Science from Sciences Po Paris and Freie Universität Berlin, along with a Bachelor in European Studies from Sciences Po Paris, Nancy campus.

Her research examines how social and administrative categorization in Germany’s humanitarian admission programs from Lebanon and Turkey creates inequalities in refugee recognition processes. She can be reached at welfens@hertie-school.org.
