His academic credentials include a 1995 BSc Hons in Applied Biological Sciences focusing on the genetics of ageing, followed by a 2000 PhD investigating stress hormones' effects on bone chemistry across lifespans and pregnancy. This biological sciences expertise directly informs his clinical specialization in elderly care.
Dr Chummun's research integrates endocrinology and genetics with healthcare applications, particularly stress management, cardiac health, and pharmacogenomics. He spearheads national genetics/genomics education initiatives for healthcare professionals within pre-registration curricula and contributes to nursing education through co-authoring an anatomy/physiology workbook for future practitioners.
His scholarly recognition includes Fellowship in the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB). Publications span stress management, cardiac pharmacogenomics, and genetics in professional journals, complemented by book chapters on stress and genomics.
He actively supervises undergraduate, Master's, and PhD project students while teaching across pre-registration nursing, midwifery, paramedic science, and post-registration health visiting programs. His work bridges biological sciences with clinical nursing practice, emphasizing evidence-based elderly care education.
