Nandini Ramanujam is a Full Professor (Professional) at McGill University's Faculty of Law, serving as Co-Director and Program Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism. She leads the International Human Rights Internship Program and represents McGill in the Scholars at Risk Network. Her work bridges theoretical legal scholarship with practical field engagement in human rights, development, and governance.
She holds a D.Phil in Economics from the University of Oxford (1996) and advanced degrees from Bhopal University, including a B.Sc. (1982) and M.A./M.Phil in Economics (1984-1985). Her career includes pivotal roles in higher education reform in post-communist Eastern Europe and Eurasia, alongside strategic advisory roles for organizations like the Open Society Institute and Equitas.
Her research focuses on rule of law, economic justice, and the interplay between civil society and legal systems. Key themes include sustainable development, food security, and the role of media in promoting accountability. Recent publications analyze China’s Global Development Initiative, disability rights policy in India, and the bidirectional link between academic freedom and rule of law in authoritarian contexts.
Ramanujam has served on boards of Centraide Greater Montreal, the Canadian Human Rights Foundation, and currently chairs Welcome Collective Montreal. Her work emphasizes experiential learning, evidenced by her contributions to human rights pedagogy through the McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law and interdisciplinary collaborations.
