Marie Deschamps is a distinguished jurist, former Supreme Court of Canada Justice (2002–2012), and Adjunct Professor at McGill University (since 2012) and Université de Sherbrooke (since 2006). Born in Repentigny, QC, she holds an LLL from Université de Montréal (1974) and an LLM from McGill University (1983). Her career spans judicial service, legal education, and advocacy for legal ethics.
As a Supreme Court Justice, she authored numerous influential opinions, emphasizing Charter rights and judicial philosophy. She championed transparency in the legal profession, served on boards of higher education institutions, and promoted access to justice through organizations like Pro Bono Canada. Her awards include the Companion of the Order of Canada (2013) and an Honorary Doctorate from Université de Montréal (2008).
Her work in education focused on integrating ethics into legal training and reforming legal frameworks, such as advising on Canada’s Bankruptcy Act and Competition Tribunal.
