Nancy Nowacek is an Associate Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology’s School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. She is a research-based artist, designer, and educator focused on deconstructing social systems through collaborative projects addressing climate change, urban waterways, aging, and intergenerational exchange. Her work spans visual art, public installations, and socially engaged practices.
Education: MFA in Social Practice (California College of the Arts), MFA in Visual Communication (Virginia Commonwealth University), BFA in Photography and Design (University of Michigan). Certified in mental health first aid and personal fitness training.
Research interests include:
- Climate change advocacy through art
- Intergenerational collaboration and ageism reduction
- Urban waterway stewardship
- Public art as civic dialogue
Key projects include:
- Co-founder of Works on Water, a climate-focused art collective
- Lead artist for Tending the Edge (NYC waterfront advocacy project)
- Education-Artist-In-Residence at Walker Art Center
- "Monument to Habitat Compensation Island" public art installation
Professional recognition includes fellowships from Eyebeam and Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, grants from NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and exhibitions in the US, Europe, and Asia.
Creative workshops span 10+ institutions, focusing on play-based learning and impossible idea exploration. Active in 20+ professional organizations including College Art Association and Center for Artistic Activism.
