Nancy Bentley serves as the Donald T. Regan Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, teaching courses in American literature and culture, sexuality, kinship studies, and law and literature. She previously chaired the English Department and received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Her research centers on American literature's engagement with gender, sexuality, and kinship structures, examining how nineteenth-century print culture mediated concepts of 'clannishness' (associated with indigeneity) and 'kinlessness' (associated with African descent). Current work in her project New World Kinship and American Literature analyzes indigenous perspectives and African American narrative traditions through interdisciplinary lenses.
Recent publications in Critical Inquiry and American Literary History demonstrate her methodological fusion of literary analysis with anthropology, legal history, and critical race theory, particularly exploring intersections of race, law, and narrative form in 19th-20th century contexts.
