John Ernest is the Judge Hugh M. Morris Professor and Chair of the Department of English at the University of Delaware. He previously held the Eberly Family Distinguished Professorship at West Virginia University and taught at the University of New Hampshire. His research focuses on African American literature, slavery, and historical narratives. Ernest has authored or edited 12 books including Liberation Historiography and Chaotic Justice. He co-edits the Regenerations series at West Virginia University Press. Awards include the Jean Brierley Teaching Award and UNH Diversity Positive Change Award. His current project explores the origins of white racism in 19th-century literature.
Research interests span African American literary traditions, historical writing by Black authors, and intersections of race, class, and memory. Recent work addresses antislavery communities, post-Reconstruction narratives, and the legacy of Frederick Douglass. He has published widely on slave narratives, literary historiography, and racial politics in American literature.
Grants and institutional service include leadership roles in African American Studies programs and curriculum development. Active in promoting diversity initiatives in academia, he has received multiple teaching excellence recognitions. His editorial work revitalizes underappreciated texts by early African American writers. Current projects involve interdisciplinary approaches to race and literary form.
