Robert S. Levine is a Distinguished University Professor of English and Affiliate Professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland. He specializes in 19th-century American literature, with a focus on African American/African Diaspora studies, American literary nationalism, and textual/digital studies. His research emphasizes figures like Frederick Douglass, Herman Melville, and Martin Delany, exploring themes of race, transnationalism, and historical memory.
Levine has authored or edited over 20 books, including The Failed Promise: Reconstruction, Frederick Douglass, and the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson (2021) and The Lives of Frederick Douglass (2016). He serves as General Editor of The Norton Anthology of American Literature and contributes to journals such as American Literary History and Leviathan.
His awards include the Hubbell Medal for Lifetime Achievement (2014), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2013), and the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award (2007). Levine is also committed to teaching, organizing the annual Local Americanists lecture series, and advocating for diverse literary canons.
Levine’s work bridges academic rigor and public engagement, with recent projects addressing critical race theory and the legacies of Reconstruction.
