Associate Professor Najla Nasr is affiliated with the University of Sydney's School of Medical Sciences, focusing on HIV/AIDS research with a strong emphasis on immunology and virology. Her work targets therapeutic strategies to eliminate HIV viral reservoirs, develop vaccines, and understand HIV transmission dynamics. She collaborates with institutions like the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases (Sydney ID).
Research interests include HIV reactivation via interferon therapy, characterization of tissue-resident memory T cells, and the role of mononuclear phagocytes in HIV acquisition. Current projects involve immunotherapy approaches using CAR T cells and studying HSV-HIV coinfection mechanisms.
Recent publications (2021–2025) highlight advancements in dendritic cell biology, CAR T cell therapies for HIV eradication, and mucosal transmission pathways. Key themes include viral reservoir persistence, immune modulation, and cellular interactions in HIV pathogenesis. Grants funded by NHMRC and Australian government initiatives support her work on shock-and-kill strategies and interferon-based therapies.
Her team advises three doctoral students and maintains international collaborations with researchers at the University of California and Emory University. She leads projects at the intersection of virology, immunology, and clinical translation, aiming to bridge basic science with HIV cure research.
