Professor Nadia Badawi is a renowned neonatologist and Cerebral Palsy Alliance Chair of Cerebral Palsy Research at The University of Sydney. She concurrently serves as Medical Director and Co-Head of the Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Her affiliations include the Brain and Mind Centre and leadership roles in international collaborations like the International CP Genomics Consortium.
Her research focuses on cerebral palsy prevention, newborn encephalopathy, and optimizing outcomes in neonatal intensive care. She leads a 45-researcher team, contributing to Australia's 40% reduction in cerebral palsy rates. Key projects include the SuPreme and REACH studies, and she has pioneered CP registers in Australia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.
Professor Badawi has secured over $70 million in grants and published extensively in Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, Pediatrics, and others. Awards include the AM (2014), NSW Health Research Award (2023), and recognition as a global leader in CP prevention/cure research.
She supervises 7 PhD students and has trained over 100 clinicians. Her advocacy includes improving developmental follow-up procedures, advancing assistive technologies, and advocating for marginalized populations in low-resource settings.
Current teams include the Grace Centre's Australasian NIDCAP Training Centre and the International Multidisciplinary Prevention & Cure Team for CP. Her work bridges clinical care, research, and global health equity.
