His work examines democracy and publicity in postwar mass gatherings, focusing on labor and cultural movements. Key projects include analyzing workers' theatrical movements, peace activism from 1945-1950s, and the Sanrizuka film screening movement using Ogawa Productions archives. His publications reveal how collective performance shaped labor identity and public discourse.
Recent research trends emphasize cross-regional comparisons of theatrical movements, the evolution of audience reception, and the impact of postwar policies on civic engagement. Grants include JSPS funding for studies on documentary complementary use and comparative analysis of labor subjectivity.
Academic contributions extend to archival science through roles at the Museum of Modern Japanese Literature and network memberships in the Japan Sociological Society and Japan Association for Urban Sociology. He has organized historical documents from the Hitotsubashi University Faculty and Staff Union and citizen activity archives.
Nagashima's teaching includes courses on corporate sustainability at Waseda University and sociology at multiple institutions. His projects bridge historical analysis with contemporary issues like event space resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and the role of archives in preserving social movement legacies.
