Murat Sönmez is a Lecturer in the Folk Dance Department at the Turkish Medical Faculty of Gaziantep University. His academic career spans over a decade, with active contributions to dance research since 2010.

His research intersects performing arts, folk dance anthropology, and movement physiology. Recent work explores the body as a cultural artifact through historical anthropology lenses, while earlier publications examine biomechanical relationships in dance practice. A 2017 book chapter co-authored with Özbilgin Mehmet Öcal establishes methodological frameworks in dance research.
