Murad Idris is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Associate Director of the Global Islamic Center at the University of Michigan. He holds affiliations with the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies (CMENAS), the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC), and the Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS). His academic roles include membership in the GISC Executive Committee and serving as Interim Director of GISC during 2023. Prof. Idris specializes in political theory, with a focus on war/peace dynamics, critical theory, anticolonial thought, and Islamic political thought.
He earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania, along with an MA from the same institution and a BA from Carleton University. His research has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the David Easton Award (APSA) for his book War for Peace and the ISA’s International Ethics Best Book Award.
Current projects include Islam under Modernity: Genealogies of Definition, Reform, and Jihad and a study of Sayyid Qutb’s global thought. His work appears in journals like Perspectives on Politics and European Journal of Political Theory. Prof. Idris has held fellowships at institutions such as the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and Columbia University’s Society of Fellows in the Humanities.
