Birger Munk Olsen is a Professor of Romance languages and literatures at the University of Copenhagen, where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Letters (1979–1980). Previously, he held roles such as Lecturer for Scandinavian languages at the Sorbonne (1968–1974) and Deputy director of the Danish Academy in Rome (1964–1966). His academic career spans over five decades, with expertise in French medieval literature and broader literary studies.
He was elected to the Academy of Europe in 1988 under the Classics & Oriental Studies section. Notably, he served as President of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters from 1996 to 2003, demonstrating significant leadership in academic and scholarly communities.
